Your switchboard is the control centre of your home’s electrical system. It distributes electricity throughout the property and contains protective devices designed to shut off the power if an electrical fault occurs.
So, how often should it be upgraded?
There is no fixed replacement schedule for switchboards in New Zealand. Some can continue operating safely for decades, while others may need upgrading sooner because of their condition, capacity or outdated components.
Rather than relying on age alone, look for signs that your switchboard may no longer meet the needs of your home.
Five Signs Your Switchboard May Need Upgrading
1. It still has ceramic fuses
Ceramic or rewireable fuses are common in older Hamilton homes. Their presence does not automatically mean the switchboard is unsafe, but it is a sign that the electrical installation is older and should be assessed.
Modern switchboards use circuit breakers, which are easier to reset and provide more reliable protection when a fault occurs.
2. There is no RCD protection
Residual current devices, or RCDs, are designed to quickly disconnect the power when they detect an electrical fault. They provide an important additional layer of protection against electric shock.
If your switchboard does not have RCD protection, it is worth asking a registered electrician whether an upgrade is recommended.
3. Fuses or circuit breakers regularly trip
Frequent tripping can indicate an overloaded circuit, faulty appliance, damaged wiring or another electrical issue. Continually resetting the circuit breaker without investigating the cause may leave the underlying problem unresolved.
4. You notice heat, buzzing or a burning smell
A switchboard should not feel hot, make unusual sounds or smell burnt. Discolouration, crackling, corrosion and visible damage are also warning signs.
If you notice any of these issues, contact an electrician urgently. Do not remove the switchboard cover or attempt to inspect its internal components yourself.
5. You are adding new electrical equipment
Your existing switchboard may not have enough capacity or space if you are planning to install:
Solar panels or battery storage
An EV charger
An induction cooktop
A spa pool
A heat pump or ducted air-conditioning system
Additional circuits for a renovation or extension
Having the switchboard assessed early can help you plan the work correctly and avoid unexpected costs later.
What Does a Switchboard Upgrade Include?
The work required will depend on your property, but a switchboard upgrade may include:
Removing outdated fuses and electrical equipment
Installing modern circuit breakers and RCD protection
Replacing or upgrading the switchboard enclosure
Testing the electrical installation
Correctly identifying and labelling circuits
