If you own a campervan, motorhome, or caravan in New Zealand, keeping your electrical system safe and compliant is essential. That’s where an Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF) comes in.
At Alectrics, we regularly inspect campervans and see a lot of confusion around what’s actually checked. Here’s a clear breakdown of what we look at during an Electrical WOF and what you can expect.
The Key Items We Check During an Electrical WOF
During every EWOF inspection, we focus on safety, compliance, and reliability. The main areas we assess include:
✅ RCD Protection
RCDs (Residual Current Devices) are critical safety devices that protect you from electric shock. We check that RCDs are installed correctly and trip as they should.
✅ Socket Outlets
All socket outlets are inspected to ensure they’re correctly wired, secure, and safe to use.
✅ Earthing
Proper earthing is essential for electrical safety. We check that the earthing system is compliant and free from corrosion or damage.
✅ Cabling Condition
We inspect all visible cabling to ensure it’s in good condition, correctly supported, and protected from wear, heat, or moisture.
✅ Inlet & Supply Lead
The inlet and lead are checked closely, as these are often moved, plugged in, and exposed to the elements. Any cuts, nicks, or damage can result in a failed inspection.
How Long Does an Electrical WOF Take?
An Electrical WOF inspection typically takes around 30- 45 minutes, depending on the setup of your campervan and whether any issues are found.
Once everything has been checked and passed, we’ll issue your Certificate of Verification, meaning your vehicle is compliant and ready for travel.
What If There’s a Problem?
If we find any issues during the inspection, we’ll:
Explain exactly what needs attention
Let you know what’s required to make it compliant
In many cases, fix the issue on the spot during the inspection
This helps save time and avoids the need for a return visit.
