Electrical safety is a big part of owning a campervan, motorhome, or caravan. During Electrical Warrant of Fitness (EWOF) inspections, we often see the same issues coming up - many of which are easily preventable.
Here are the most common reasons campervans fail an Electrical WOF, and what to keep an eye on.
The Most Common Electrical WOF Failures
⚠️ Damaged Leads
Power leads are one of the biggest failure points. They’re constantly plugged in, unplugged, moved, and stored, which makes them prone to:
Cuts in the insulation
Nicks or exposed wiring
General wear and tear
Even small damage can be a safety risk and result in a failed EWOF.
⚠️ Missing RCD Protection
RCDs are critical safety devices designed to protect you from electric shock. If RCD protection is missing or not functioning correctly, the system won’t meet EWOF requirements.
⚠️ Incorrect Circuit Breaker Discrimination
Circuit breakers must be correctly matched and coordinated. If discrimination isn’t set up properly, faults may not isolate safely, which can lead to compliance issues.
⚠️ DIY Wiring That Isn’t Compliant
We often see wiring that’s been modified or installed without following New Zealand electrical standards. Even if it “works,” non-compliant wiring can be unsafe and fail an inspection.
⚠️ Rusted or Corroded Earthing
Earthing components can deteriorate over time, especially in damp or coastal environments. Rusted or corroded earthing compromises electrical safety and is a common reason for failure.
How to Avoid These Issues
To help keep your campervan safe and compliant:
Regularly check your power leads for any signs of damage
Keep an eye on electrical components exposed to moisture or movement
Avoid DIY electrical work unless carried out by a qualified electrician
Have your system professionally checked if you’re unsure
Unsure About Your Electrical Setup?
If you’re unsure whether your campervan’s electrical system is compliant, it’s best to have it checked by a professional before inspection time.
